Aldis installs its first GridSmart system in Beijing

Aldis Corp has announced the first installation of the GridSmart Spectra 360 system in Beijing, China. The newly installed system – which uses video tracking for traffic management – is located at the intersection just outside the North China University of Technology. Additional locations are planned throughout the city in the coming months.

The system is available in China through a partnership with China Sage Consultants Inc. The company will also distribute the Optima 360, which adds support for vehicle counting data and pedestrian handling and the Ultra 360, which will be available in late 2009 and features vehicle pre-emption and dilemma zone facilities.

The primary purpose for the GridSmart system will be focused on intersection efficiency and the city of Beijing plans to use some of the tracking features to monitor pedestrians, bicycles and scooters. In addition, the system will provide the city with rich traffic data to help understand patterns and identify potential problem areas. The university’s ITS department will maintain the systems and collect data to further their research. “We are very pleased with the results and look forward to adding additional GridSmart systems around the city,” enthuses Li Zheng Xi, VP of North China University of Technology. “This is an exciting new technology that will improve the way we handle traffic now and into the future.”
