Intertraffic 2010 to showcase intelligent vehicle communications technologies

A consortium led by the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management (V&W) has been selected by the management of three major European research projects – CVIS, SAFESPOT and COOPERS – to host ‘i&CDrive’ at Intertraffic 2010 in the Netherlands.

i&CDrive will be a trade exhibition, on-road demonstration and conference focusing on cooperative mobility using next-generation car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communication systems. Such technologies and applications for smarter, safer and cleaner mobility are currently under development in Europe, Asia and North America.

In addition to the Dutch government, the organizing consortium comprises Connekt/ITS Netherlands, TNO, Vialis, the Province of North Brabant, the Province of North Holland, ARS T&TT, Logica, Intertraffic Amsterdam, Technolution, Peek Traffic, the City of Amsterdam and Amsterdam RAI.

The event is supported by ERTICO-ITS Europe and the three research projects at the heart of the showcase are co-financed from the European Community’s Sixth Framework Programme.

The CVIS project has developed and tested a technical platform – to be used both in-vehicle and integrated with roadside systems – enabling direct communication between vehicles and road infrastructure. This platform allows for the provision of services to vehicles and their drivers, such as congestion avoidance, traffic sign information, parking booking, road status, and access to reserved lanes and restricted zones. These services can be delivered wirelessly to vehicles and displayed to the driver.

The SAFESPOT project aims to gain more insight into how intelligent vehicles and roads can work together to achieve a breakthrough in traffic safety.

The COOPERS project is developing a way to display dynamic traffic management information as variable message signs in the vehicles. The goal is to inform the driver in the best way on the road ahead of his position and add flexibility for traffic managers and road operators.

i&CDrive will take place at Amsterdam RAI from March 23-26, 2010, in association with Intertraffic Amsterdam 2010 – the world’s leading exhibition for infrastructure, traffic management, safety and parking.
