UK speed camera makes US$1.5 million (£1 million) in five months

A traffic camera set up to catch motorists speeding through roadworks in London issued US$1.5 million (£1 million) worth of tickets in just five months of operation. The fixed camera, which was set to monitor cars on the busy A316 Country Way, in Hanworth, southwest London, was catching motorists at the rate of more than 100 every day and ended capturing 16,213 violations. With a normal speeding offense resulting in a US$93 (£60) fine and 3 penalty points on a driver’s license, it means the camera site was responsible for US$1.5 million (£973,000) worth of fines and almost 50,000 points.

Transport for London put the camera up to police a temporary 48km/h (30mph) limit on the road, which usually has a 80km/h (50mph) restriction, and is used by thousands coming into and out of the capital via the M3 motorway. Works at the site included improving the signage and road markings, putting in more street lighting, as well as waterproofing and resurfacing the viaduct. The camera was put in place to catch speeders heading in both directions from mid June to the end of November last year. It caught 11,010 motorists breaking the limit heading out of the capital and another 5,203 heading into London. The figures for the speed camera haul were revealed by the Metropolitan Police Force.
