European BMW telematics contract awarded to WirelessCar

Swedish telemetry company, WirelessCar, has been selected as the Telematics Service Provider for BMW in Europe. The contract will ultimately connect all newly produced BMW vehicles in the European market from June 2010 onwards and will also include a migration path for all legacy vehicles currently operating in the marketplace. Services will be available on all models for a period of up to four years.

The basic services will include: an automatic and manual emergency call; a breakdown or roadside assistance call; an up-to-date traffic information function; an operator-supported information or concierge service, which will offer the driver a wide range of local information and data; and a feature for sending geo-coded information, such as a Point-Of-Interest (POI), to the car.

Over the past few years, WirelessCar has created a strong relationship with BMW as its Telematics Service Provider in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Australia. They have also been co-developing the Next Generation Telematics Protocol for use on their next generation system. The ability of WirelessCar to be a global provider has helped to secure the contract. They will be working with a third party provider, as a call centre partner, to deliver BMW’s services. WirelessCar is part of Volvo IT, which are a global IT company and a member of the Volvo Group. In spite of being owned by one of the leading groups in the global vehicle manufacturing industry, they are free to take on any manufacturer as a customer.
