London's congestion charge bills phantom lorries

London's congestion charge system has received further criticism (see: Luxury car owners avoid London congestion charge) following revelations that it has been billing phantom trucks.

A lorry in Italy was charged for being in the central London congestion zone on the same day.

The error, blamed on Transport for London’s ANPR system, was only spotted when transport boss Darren Jeavons of Birmingham, UK, checked his lorry’s satellite tracking records against TfL’s bill.

Another Birmingham haulier, Phil Benton, also claims that two of his lorries were charged for being in London when they were actually more than 200km away in Wales.
