OBU installation prices cut for Slovakia's ETC scheme

The two companies that are installing on-board units (OBUs) into trucks for Slovakia's new toll system (scheduled to go live on January 1) have agreed to cut their installation charge by Euro 23 (US$33) to Euro 111.90 (US$161). CESMAD and SkyToll agreed to cut the price following a request from the highway management company, NDS.

Transport Minister Ľubomír Vážny initiated a meeting between both companies and NDS. Vážny had gone on record saying that he found the original charge of Euro 134.90 (US$194) too high.

Although securing this price cut is good news, whether the system will actually go live tomorrow remains to be seen. A number of events have unfolded that have led to 150 Slovak transport companies to call on the Transport Ministry to postpone the launch of the toll system from January 1 to July 2010 as they are worried that various elements are just not ready.
