Highway-speed tolling for Maine Turnpike

Right: High speed tolling is planned for the Maine Turnpike by the end of next year

The first toll plaza using highway-speed collection in New England USA is planned for the Maine Turnpike. The authority says it will build the new plaza in New Gloucester so drivers with E-ZPasses will be able to drive through without slowing and have their tolls recorded by overhead sensors. It is scheduled to be in place by the end of 2009.

The current plaza has 10 lanes and E-ZPass drivers must slow to 10mph (16km/h). The plan is for the center tollbooths to be removed and two lanes in each direction to be topped by a canopy that will record vehicles that pass through at highway speeds.

Six booths will be built for drivers to pay by cash. The budget for the project is US$4.8 million. More highway-speed toll lanes are planned before 2012 for York at the southern end of the Maine Turnpike.
