New company to boost Russian GNSS

Right: Will GLONASS rival GPS? A new company aims to boost the constellation’s fortunes

A new company has been formed to develop applications for GLONASS, the Russian rival to GPS. The constellation of positioning satellites has the potential to offer vehicle tracking and navigation services and the new business, called Navigation and Information Systems will promote its wider use.

The company will focus on coordinating development, providing information and navigation services, mass production, sales and servicing navigation equipment. At the federal level it will act as an operator, while at the regional level it will provide integrated information and navigation services. It’s a shared venture run by Sitronics and the Russian Scientific Insitute of Space Instrument Engineering.

GLONASS received a boost when three new satellites were put into orbit last month. The network had been underfunded for many years and useful satellite signals had become more difficult to obtain. Now there are 20 satellites in place, although only nine of them are currently operating.
