Europe plans US$440 million ITS project

The European Commission is proposing to spend US$440 million (Euro 300 million) on a continent-wide ITS project in the next six years.

Called EASYWAY, it includes activities in the majority of European Union states and is aimed at optimizing the capacity and efficiency of existing and new road infrastructure. It will also enhance interoperability, security and reliability of the road network.

The figures have been announced at the same time as major spending plans for rail and waterway development.

The Commission also confirmed that US$282 million (Euro 190 million) would be needed to launch the Galileo satellite navigation constellation. In total, it plans to spend US$7.6 billion (Euro 5.1 billion) to improve transport in Europe.
