More speed cameras for Malaysia

Malaysia is to install 1,500 speed cameras by March 2008 after a trial showed that the death toll from road accidents fell by more than 20% when they were deployed. The Road Safety department reports that cameras helped cut the number of daily deaths from 17 to 13 during the festive season, when cameras were trialed at accident hot-spots. Drivers caught by the cameras face a US$90 fine (RM300). Nearly 6,000 people die on Malaysia’s roads each year and the government hopes to cut the death toll by two thirds.
