Study predicts booming Chinese telematics market

Right:  China's telematics and infotainment market is predicted  to grow to US$3.9 billion in 2012

Telematics in China has seen rapid commercial growth over the past two years and analysts Frost & Sullivan predict that revenues for the relatively young telematics and infotainment markets in China will grow to US$3.9 billion in 2012 from only US$422.3 million in 2005.

Contributing to the upsurge will be continued growth in both demand and production of cars, increasing disposable incomes, and growing acknowledgment of the benefits of telematics and infotainment. The 2008 Olympics and the 2010 World Trade Exhibition are also expected to boost demand.

Frost & Sullivan says that telematics and infotainment systems are also expected to become more affordable and navigation systems will increasingly be offered as standard in cars. High vehicle occupancy rates in China will also boost demand for navigation systems (both portable and in-car) as drivers navigate to unfamiliar locations.

The study suggests that distributors and manufacturers need to work together on campaigns to raise awareness and promote the use of telematics and infotainment systems. Vehicle manufacturers must also play a part in developing the market by lowering production costs, perhaps by sourcing from local suppliers instead of importing parts.
