Telvent awarded new tunnel management contract in Brazil

Telvent has announced that it has been selected by CCR Rodoanel to implement its SmartMobility Tunnel system on the western section of Sao Paulo’s Beltway, which is known as Rodoanel Mario Covas. Once completed, the Sao Paulo Beltway will enable better allocation of traffic flows across the Metropolitan Region of Sao Paulo (MRSP), as well as a reduction in traffic congestion in the city center. The tunnel is one of the widest and longest tunnels in Brazil, with a daily traffic flow of 240,000 vehicles. The enhancement of the tunnel’s highway safety and security has been identified as a priority by CCR Rodoanel and MRSP authorities.

The new tunnel management system will provide the operators in charge of management and maintenance of the highway’s three tunnels, constant intelligence on what is happening inside the tunnel, enabling them to control traffic in real-time and to be prepared to respond quickly and effectively to any emergency situation occurring within the installations. This will lead to a substantial improvement in incident response times and more efficient management of maintenance plans. Telvent will install its SmartMobility Tunnel system, based on its supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) technology, which will allow operators to centralize both tunnel infrastructure and traffic management, giving them a comprehensive set of tools that will facilitate management, increasing security at the same time. Implemented and integrated into the control center will be systems for: fire detection control; emergency and security signaling; CCTV surveillance; emergency intercom; variable message signage (VMS); lighting; ventilation; and a communications network.

The company has successfully completed numerous projects in Brazil, including several highway management projects, ticketing systems and the Urban Traffic Control (UTC) development and maintenance in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte. It has also implemented the tunnel management system for the El Morro Alto Tunnels and has installed a centralized tunnel management system for the Ecovias dos Inmigrantes tollway. Announcing the award of the contract, Telvent’s chairman and CEO, Ignacio Gonzalez, said, “The Brazilian market is very important for us. This agreement demonstrates our active involvement in the Brazilian traffic sector and helps CCR Rodoanel and MRSP towards reaching the goal of improved safety throughout the road infrastructure network.”
