Abu Dhabi to implement integrated travel information system

Iteris has been awarded the prime contract by the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport for the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of the first integrated travel information and navigation services (i-TINS) system in the Middle East. Design and implementation work on the US$2.45 million contract will begin immediately, with the system expected to be operational by early 2013, followed by a 24-month operations and maintenance agreement. Iteris will manage the project from its Abu Dhabi office, with support from its USA-based staff. The company will lead a team of international Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) professionals from firms that include TrafQuest, Open Roads Consulting and Mygistics. The team will focus on delivering a landmark traveler information system, along with establishing guidelines and standards for accuracy and reliability of travel status and real-time routing options for both private users and DoT operations staff.

Iteris, in partnership with TrafQuest, has been working with the Abu Dhabi DoT for three years, developing its ITS Strategy and Action Plan, as well as authoring guidelines and manuals for traffic engineering and transportation planning practices. Salah Al-Marzouqi, Abu Dhabi DoT’s ITS division director, said, “We are very pleased to embark on the first advanced multi-modal traveler information system in the MENA (Middle-East, North Africa) Region. This project will provide transport network users with dynamic information relating to congestion, prevailing conditions, incidents, route guidance and travel times, among others, via the web, smart phones and in-car navigation devices. The Iteris team won this tender based on their qualifications to provide an innovative solution for supporting our commitment to improve transport in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.”

Abbas Mohaddes, president and CEO of Iteris, commented, “We are honored to have been selected by Abu Dhabi DoT for this prestigious program. This project provides us with an excellent platform to provide our services and expertise in the United Arab Emirates and Middle East, enabling us to broaden our international experience in traveler information systems. We look forward to assisting them in tailoring our Advanced Traveler Information System offerings to their needs and providing a state-of-the-art traveler information resource to Abu Dhabi residents and travelers.”
