Volvo launches headlight safety system

Volvo has revealed that its new S60, V60 and XC60 models can be equipped with a system that makes driving in the dark safer for all road users. The updated Active High Beam Control (AHBC) allows the driver to use high beam continuously, due to an ingenious mechanism that prevents dazzling of oncoming drivers. When an oncoming vehicle approaches, or when catching up with another vehicle from behind, the AHBC system helps prevent dazzling the other driver by shading out the beam in the area surrounding the other vehicle. The system uses information from the camera, mounted by the rear-view mirror, which is already used by the vehicle’s auto brake and detection systems. The camera identifies the other vehicle and the area that needs to be shaded and the control unit relays the information to an ingenious projector module mechanism that is integrated into the Xenon headlamp. A tiny cylinder fitted with metal pieces of different sizes automatically shades just as much of the beam as necessary. The technology, which is active at speeds down to 14km/h (9mph), is accurate enough to frame the chosen object with only a 1.5-degree margin.

The main advantage of the AHBC system is that the traffic environment outside the shaded area is still illuminated by the high beam. The system, which also works for motorcycles, improves the driver’s chances of detecting objects at the side of the road, such as parked cars, cyclists, pedestrians and animals. “Our aim with the renewed Active High Beam Control technology is to enhance visibility in the dark, by making it possible to use high beam permanently, without having to switch to low beam when meeting or catching up with other cars,” said Professor Lotta Jakobsson, senior technical safety specialist at the Volvo Cars Safety Center. “The technology makes driving at night more comfortable and safe. It also makes it easier to focus on driving and is an excellent example of our ‘Designed Around You’ approach, which focuses on features that really make a difference to the customer.”
