DART to launch Integrated Corridor Management website

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is launching a new internet site that will provide real-time traffic information on the US 75 North Central Expressway. From the beginning of April, DART will be in charge gathering and dispensing all of the information on the route, taking data from the regions multiple transportation agencies, including: the cities of Dallas, Highland Park, Richardson and Plano; the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT); and the North Texas Tollway Authority. The scheme is one of the US Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) ICM (Integrated Corridor Management) Pioneer Sites, which is operated through the Research and Innovative Technology Administration’s (RITA) ITS Joint Programs Office (ITS-JPO).

The Dallas ICM Pioneer Site will integrate ITS information from: the DalTrans Transportation Management Center (TMC), which takes information from TxDOT, DART and Dallas County Sheriff’s Department; CCTV cameras; freeway traffic sensors together with more than 40 new detectors along arterial routes; Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) with posted travel times; the Mobility Assistance Patrol; and connected traffic signals, including those equipped with priority systems. Explaining the new ‘511DFW.com’ internet site, DART spokesman, Morgan Lyons, said, “It’s information-sharing for the commuter, which is the easiest way to describe Integrated Corridor Management. Right now it’s not as coordinated as it could be. The idea is to catch people sooner. You do get information, but it’s from a lot of different sources, and that works pretty well if you just travel in one jurisdiction. But right now, nothing pulls all those bits of information together. When this thing comes together, and it’s gotta mature over time, people will experience a smoother commute, because people can make different choices.”
