Spanish smart mobility project highlighted at Citytech

The successful implementation of a smart mobility project that was developed for the city of San Sebastián in Spain has been presented at the Citytech event in Rome, Italy. To demonstrate the effectiveness of its advanced traffic and public transportation management systems, Indra has highlighted the smart mobility project that it implemented on bus lines in the city of San Sebastián, and intercity buses in the Basque region of Guipúzcoa. The project included a set of systems that are aimed at achieving more efficient, ecological and sustainable mobility. It has a bus priority system based on GPS analysis of the vehicle location that improves travel times on public transportation. The system implemented by Indra links the GPS installed on all buses to the traffic light control center, in order to speed up or extend the time for green lights when a bus is due to pass, giving priority to public transportation, as well as enabling priority for a vehicle that has been delayed from its scheduled timetable.

The system also includes a passenger information system, enabling estimated arrivals and messaging at stops to be managed, showing real-time information to users with the vehicle’s estimated arrival and location, as well as service warnings or incidents. In conjunction with this information, passengers have a unified payment system with a contactless rechargeable card valid for public transportation in San Sebastián and Guipúzcoa. Operation of the buses in San Sebastián and the Guipúzcoa region are controlled by the Operations Support Systems (OSS) that act as the ‘brain’ for urban and intercity passenger transport. The OSS platform includes the Operations Assistance and Passenger Information Systems (OAS/PIS) that takes the information from the buses’ OBUs (On-Board Units) and relays it to both passenger iformation signage and the Management and Control Center. Since its deployment, the system has improved the management and efficiency of the bus network, as well as contributing to cutting traffic jams, minimizing carbon emissions and increasing the use of public transportation.
