McCain announces winner of its Backpack Cabinet Giveaway competition

Developer and supplier of advanced transportation systems and equipment, McCain Inc, has announced the lucky winner of its Backpack Cabinet Giveaway competition, which was launched in August, immediately after the release of the company’s newest and smallest ATC cabinet.

McCain has revealed that Victor Bingochea of the City of Phoenix was drawn as the winner, securing the Arizona city a free Backpack Cabinet and a complete Gridsmart System for intersection control. The Backpack Cabinet is so named as it stands just 25in (63.5cm) tall, and weighs under 55 lb (25kg). A 10-year team member of the City of Phoenix signal shop, Bingochea was elated when he learned that his name had been drawn as the recipient of the equipment.

“We are a progressive city, continually looking for ways to enhance operations and improve the daily commute and quality of living for our citizens,” said Bingochea. “I am excited to help the city continue that trend through the advanced technologies found in the Backpack Cabinet and Gridsmart’s 360-degree-view camera.”

As the winning agency, the City of Phoenix will receive a state-of-the-art system for actuated intersection control that can easily be pole-mounted to free up valuable sidewalk space. McCain and Gridsmart will work with the City to provide essential training and configuration of McCain's Backpack Cabinet, equipped with an ATC eX NEMA controller and Omni eX intersection control software, and the complete Gridsmart System, including the company’s iconic Bell Camera and GS2 Processor.

Phoenix traffic service superintendent and long-time advocate of open-architecture solutions, Vince Gigliotti, said, “The City of Phoenix is very interested in testing and utilizing new technology. As one of the largest and fastest growing metropolitan areas in the USA, it is essential that our transportation solutions not only meet our needs today, but grow with us, to keep our streets and communities safe tomorrow. To that end, the open architecture and operating flexibility of ATC cabinets look promising in terms of meeting the future needs of the city’s infrastructure.”

McCain’s marketing manager, Trisha Tunilla, commented, “We were blown away by the interest in our Backpack Cabinet Giveaway, receiving entries from hundreds of agencies in the USA and Canada. We are also grateful to our partners at Gridsmart for their generosity and involvement in this campaign. With no precedent for a giveaway of this nature, we did not know what to expect. But with such a great response, who knows what the future may hold.”
