PTV to highlight the role of simulation-based forecasting on the impact of CAVs

At the Autonomous Vehicle Test & Development Symposium next week in Stuttgart, Germany, one of the leading authorities on simulation software will give a presentation on its role in predicting future transport network performance.

Advancements in technology and increased demand over the past few years have seen connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) take center stage in discussions about the look of future vehicle fleets and road networks. Many of the top automotive manufacturers and technology companies have advanced prototypes operating on the world’s roads, and are working toward the day when vehicles operate themselves and drivers become mere passengers.

Although conventional vehicles are currently ruling the streets, autonomous transport modes are rapidly approaching. Governments and transport agencies need to know how will these autonomous vehicles will behave on their roads, what impact they will have on levels of congestion, and what changes need to be made to ensure a smooth transition to a self-driving future.

Taking place alongside Autonomous Vehicle Technology World Expo 2017, on June 20-22, the Symposium will feature a presentation from Dr Jochen Lohmiller, PTV’s product manager for the Vissim software platform, about ‘Simulation-based forecasting of the impact of autonomous driving’. Lohmiller’s main focus will be on how stakeholders can evaluate the coexistence of autonomous and conventional vehicles in the transition phase, or the world after the transition phase, with microscopic simulation tools.

To predict the impact of the latest mobility trends and technologies, such as autonomous vehicles, on user behavior, transportation infrastructure, or cities, stakeholders will depend on tools that provide the corresponding knowledge.

During the three-day Expo, transport software developers, PTV will demonstrate how its Vissim software can provide a solution for optimizing research and development work on autonomous vehicles and their deployment.

The Vissim platform allows users to ‘draw’ traffic inside a computer, providing a realistic traffic simulation to test the impact of future vehicles on road networks. PTV will be showcasing its virtual test driving software system and how can help agencies, and CAV research and development teams in their everyday work.
