Hikvision supplies integrated traffic management system for Myanmar’s largest city

Chinese company Hikvision, the world’s leading supplier of video surveillance products and systems, is ensuring safe vehicle flow and helping to improve driving standards in Yangon, Myanmar (formally Burma), via an intelligent wide-area integrated traffic management system.

With a population of over seven million, Yangon (Rangoon) is the largest city in Myanmar and has experienced major traffic congestion in recent years, with regular vehicle gridlock. As a result of the major traffic jams and poor driving standards, in 2013 the city experienced nearly 3,000 vehicle collisions and 506 related fatalities.

The Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) found that the intensified traffic flow led to increased rule violations, such as jumping red lights and illegal U-turns, resulting in increased congestion and greater risk of accidents, and so issued a tender to address these issues.

Winning bidder, the China Railway 21st Bureau Company, recommended a Hikvision-based traffic management solution, and selected the company as a technical consultant on the DICTCS (Design, Installation, Commissioning of Traffic Control System) project.

Hikvision supplied a range of equipment from its Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) product range including:
• An iVMS (intelligent Video Management System) platform to control the city-wide system, which integrates vehicle checkpoints, violation detections, video surveillance, illegal parking detection, intersection control, and data integration;
• A Comprehensive Control Platform, which is central to the traffic management system employed at 154 traffic light controlled junctions, and consists of data servers servicing management, database, streaming, storage, traffic event, and traffic devices;
• Traffic Signal Controller technology is used to enforce multiple traffic rules at points across the city, so when a violating vehicle passes a checkpoint, the system captures a photo and automatically links significant data, including LPR (license plate recognition) and speed value to the evidential image;
• A Running Red Light Detection System works in conjunction with Traffic Light Signal detection, with vehicle speed captured by radar or by segmenting road sections, and Hikvision cameras providing evidential video of traffic light violations and 24/7 traffic flow monitoring;
• An Illegal Parking Detection System uses speed dome cameras and the system is able to manage common driving violations, such as intersection abuse, wrong-way driving, direction deviations, prohibited lane changes, crossing lanes, traffic counting, and reverse driving;
• Traffic Guidance Display roadside monitors supply road users with current traffic status;
• A Hikvision HD LCD video monitor wall displays citywide road network camera surveillance in the control room.
