Wells + Associates opens new Colorado office to serve clients in western USA

Virginia-based transportation consultancy Wells + Associates (W+A) has opened a new office in Denver, Colorado, in order to expand its existing work for clients in the western USA.

W+A designs sustainable, cost-effective transportation plans for commercial, residential, governmental and institutional developments across the USA. The employee-owned company assists developers, architects, businesses, towns and cities, and property owners in formulating transportation engineering and planning solutions, securing entitlements, and gaining regulatory and community approvals. W+A is a leading practitioner in designing and implementing transportation demand management strategies and multimodal plans that create better networks for commuters, owners and residents. The company’s services include: traffic engineering studies; traffic planning and design; parking analysis, design and management; development of sustainable transportation options such as transit, bicycling, and walking; and transportation demand management (TDM) solutions.

Although the majority of the company’s recent work has been focused on projects down the USA’s east coast states, W+A is now aiming to expand its activities to the west, as well as supporting its existing contracts in California, Colorado and Texas. W+A’s Colorado traffic work has included a Downtown Parking Study for the Town of Lyons, a site traffic impact assessment for the Glendale 180 project, and traffic studies and road and parking design for the Colorado Mills project in Lakewood. As the traffic engineering consultant for the Mills Corporation, W+A conducted traffic studies and parking design for the Colorado Mills Mall project. The one million plus square feet shopping mall has over 200 stores and is located seven miles west of downtown Denver at the confluence of 6th Avenue, Indiana Street, Colfax Avenue, and Interstate 70.

W+A’s traffic studies featured the unique nature of the Mills trip generation for weekday and weekend shopping patterns that led to a series of roadway and access design recommendations. These included: ramp improvements to I-70; road improvements to Colfax Avenue that included lane expansions and turn lanes; interchange design recommendations at 6th Avenue and Indiana Street; lane widening and turn lanes for Indiana Street; and recommendations on possible connections with surrounding residential streets, and traffic signals.

“Metropolitan areas like Denver are struggling to improve transportation networks and options at the rate their populations are growing,” noted Brian J Horan, head of W+A’s new Denver office. “Our team helps to solve parking, access and circulation issues on a site-by-site basis before they become problems, while also researching and implementing more transportation choices for commuters beyond the single-occupancy vehicle.”

W+A’s president, Michael J Workosky, added, “We have worked on more than 7,000 projects in 37 different states for 26 years. Our Denver presence will help us to serve new and existing clients, drawing on our national experience in improving transportation systems.”
