LED car lights will become smarter and save lives

Here's a graphic illustration of why Shuji Nakamura won the 2014 Physics Nobel Prize for creating blue LEDs – their future applications go way beyond making lighting look better and work more efficiently. How many sensors does it take to drive a car?

This video reveals the sensors in the Audi Prologue Piloted Driving prototype, which earlier this year safely drove the 560 miles between Palo Alto, Silicon Valley, and the CES show in Las Vegas, without human intervention. Audi say they will install such technology in the next generation of their A8, set for release in 2017.

Essential software for testing autonomous vehicle safety?

A free software tool promises to anticipate transportation system failures, so they can be prevented before they happen. This new video from Volpe, The National Transportation Systems Center in the USA, gives insight into their SafetyHAT (Hazard Analysis Tool). It is a new piece of software that helps to take the headaches out of using a complex process called System Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA). This frees the operative to more effectively analyze safety risks in modern transportation technologies, across multiple transportation modes and beyond. The TPRES (Traffic Powered Renewable Energy System) proposes to ‘harvest’ energy from passing traffic. It’s causing controversy as some commentators argue it isn’t ‘green’ to ‘steal’ energy from traditional engines.
