French government to install solar panels in roads

The French government has announced its intention of paving 624 miles (1,000km) of road with solar panels, which can provide uninterrupted power for all roadside infrastructure, with energy to spare. The procedure will involve affixing Colas Wattway cells, shown in this video – which are able to absorb solar energy while withstanding the weight of vehicles – to the surface of the road. According to Ségolène Royal, France’s minister of ecology and energy, 0.6 miles (1km) of the 7mm-thick photovoltaic panels, will be able to power the homes of 5,000 people (excluding heating). "The maximum effect of the program, if successful, could be to furnish five million people with electricity, or about 8% of the French population," says Royal. The Colas system is a rival to Solar Roadways, which are being developed in the USA by Scott Brusaw, who was interviewed in Traffic Technology International in 2014, to read that interview
