North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has joined the growing ranks of transportation departments who are testing drone technology for surveying tasks. This video contains new insight into the different ways of piloting such technology.

TxDOT reducing workzone times with new pavement sampling technology

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has developed a new, more efficient way of sampling pavement composition that uses smaller sample sizes. This means the time that workzones have to be in place for is reduced, which improves safety and reduces congestion. This video explains more.

AASHTO releases new software to help DOTs plan roadside advertising

The growing demand for roadside advertising can leave transportation managers at US state DOTs with an administrative headache. Now the nonprofit American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has released a dedicated software suite, which includes a geospatial mapping tool, to streamline the process so it can be done more accurately and efficiently. Why self-driving cars will revolutionize all aspects of transportation

Professor Nick Reed, academy director at the UK's Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), is one of the leading lights in autonomous vehicle research and is currently overseeing the GATEway project – testing autonomous shuttles on the streets of Greenwich, London. Here, in a video of his recent TEDx talk in Reading, England, he gives a fascinating overview of the history of autonomous vehicle research and the challenges of making such vehicles part of everyday life in the future. He also conveys his passionate belief that the arguments in favour of such technology will soon become overwhelming. V2X technology used to help vehicles navigate difficult terrain

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) are demonstrating a suite of new technologies that will help their vehicles to navigate difficult terrain. They include the ability to autonomously slow a vehicle when adverse conditions are detected; communicate with other nearby vehicles about the correct suspension and grip setups for the immediate area; and also detect subtle changes in road conditions such as moving from blacktop to gravel and deliver advisory messages to the driver accordingly. Michigan DOT and TARDEC demonstrate army vehicle platooning on the I-69

Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the US Army Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) recently partnered to publicly test and demonstrate connected vehicle technology. In the demonstration, US Army vehicles communicated with roadside units deployed by MDOT to successfully platoon along the I-69 freeway in the St Clair and Lapeer counties. World’s first 3D ‘black box’ technology for road vehicles is put to the test

Roke Manor Research has invented the world's first 'black box' for road vehicles. Known as the vPinPoint, it consists of a single dashboard camera using vision processing technology and it is capable of providing 3D reconstructions of traffic accidents without the use of GPS or maps. In this demonstration, the technology is attached to an autonomous Toyota Prius and creates accurate 3D images of an accident that occurs. To read our full report on Roke's demonstration click here.
