One of the USA’s leading suppliers of applied informatics systems for the transportation industry, Iteris Inc., has been awarded new contracts totaling US$1.4m in a further expansion of its role on the I-405 Improvement Project in southern California.
One of the largest infrastructure programs currently underway in the USA, the I-405 Improvement Project is a massive redevelopment and widening of a 16-mile (25.8km) long section of the San Diego Freeway (I-405) between State Route 73 (SR-73) freeway in Costa Mesa and Interstate 605 (I-605) near the LA County line, which is being undertaken by the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). The largest-scale project ever undertaken by OCTA, the US$1.9bn scheme is being delivered by OC 405 Partners, a joint venture (JV) between OHL USA Inc. and Astaldi Construction Corporation, in conjunction with exclusive subcontractors, Myers and Sons Construction, and All American Asphalt.
The project includes adding one regular lane in each direction between Euclid Street and I-605, and making improvements to freeway entrances, exits and bridges. The multi-year improvement project also includes the addition of dynamically-priced tolled 405 Express Lanes, incorporating the existing carpool lanes and a new lane in each direction between SR-73 and I-605, with the entire scheme due to be completed in 2023. When it is completed, the I-405 Improvement Project will shorten commute times significantly for 370,000 daily southern California drivers. OC 405 Partners has awarded Iteris the new contracts for traffic manager support, construction operations and maintenance, and associated construction phase services in support of the I-405 Project.
Since the I-405 Improvement Project’s launch in March 2017, Iteris has supported work on freeway intelligent transportation system (ITS) and 405 Express Lanes infrastructure design, temporary ITS infrastructure for use during construction, development of the project traffic management plan, and signal design at 42 intersections throughout the corridor. In November 2018, the company announced the addition of its iPeMS (Iteris Performance Measurement System) cloud-based Software as a Service (SaaS) analytics and visualization platform as part of the I-405 Improvement Project, supporting its traffic management operations during construction.
The newly awarded US$1.4m activity, which has a 12-month term from date of execution, focuses on providing on-site traffic manager support and associated construction phase services. The new agreements broaden the scope of Iteris’ construction operations services to help enhance on-site safety and mobility. The company’s transportation systems business unit provides advanced design, real-time data analytics and actionable informatics to safely improve mobility within communities and work zones, help prepare roadways for the future adoption connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) in and around smart cities.
“Since the I-405 Improvement Project’s launch in March 2017, we have been proud to support this vital transportation initiative to make roads significantly safer and more efficient for residents and commuters,” said Steven Bradley, vice president for transportation systems at Iteris. “We are thrilled to provide traffic manager support and staffing, as well as construction operations and maintenance services, in this new phase of the project.”
