This video of an autonomous vehicle (AV) ride was taken by TTi editor Tom Stone at his first ITS World Congress in Detroit in 2014. What can it tell us about how the technology has developed over the last decade? To find out Stone speaks to AV expert Nick Reed.
Professor Nick Reed, CEO and founder of Reed Mobility, is a leading expert in the field of autonomous vehicles, road safety and human factors. With his unique blend of academic knowledge and practical experience, Nick offers valuable insights into the evolving world of automated transportation.
Nick’s journey in this field began with an academic background in psychology. He first applied this expertise at the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) in the UK, where he studied driver behavior, focusing on critical issues such as distraction, fatigue, and the effects of alcohol and drugs on road safety.
As technology advanced, Nick’s interest shifted towards proactive solutions for improving road safety. Inspired by groundbreaking initiatives like the DARPA challenges and Google’s self-driving car project (now Waymo), he helped oversee London’s GATEway AV shuttle pilots.
His current work focuses on safety across transportation networks. He also continues to bring his expertise to investigating the broader societal impacts of autonomous technology and the crucial aspects of safety regulation that will guide the deployment of automated vehicles.
