Gewi, the German developer of one of the most widely-used off-the-shelf software systems for managing roadway information, has announced that Here, the open location platform company, is using its traffic camera information, and that public agencies can now access a new wrong-way driver alert system.
Here recently added the Camera feature in Gewi’s Traveler Information Center (TIC) product to the system that it uses to create and update real-time traffic information in markets around the world. Here now has the ability to collect Vizzion Traffic Camera images directly into TIC, helping its traffic editors to visualize incidents and delays when creating accurate traffic information.
Here editors can view the camera images directly within the TIC Relation window that automatically selects and shows related images from Vizzion cameras that are near a traffic incident location. The TIC Relation window can also be used by Gewi customers to automatically select and display other related information, such as work zones, weather, and traffic incidents, including those collected from other online systems, social media, Departments of Transportation (DOTs), traffic agencies, auto makers and device manufacturers.
Gewi’s Camera feature uses feeds from Vizzion which aggregates the world’s largest traffic camera network with over 40,000 cameras in 30 countries, for customers in the fleet, broadcast, web/mobile, and automotive industries. Traffic cameras verify traffic flow data, display weather and road surface conditions, and give the most insight into traffic incidents. Vizzion’s traffic camera service on TIC allows Here traffic editors to see the extent of an incident, incident type, and pinpoint exactly when lanes are cleared again.

Every year, thousands of lives are lost globally due to wrong-way drivers. By connecting two commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) systems from Gewi and TrafficVision, public agencies now have access to a powerful real-time tool to enable wrong-way driver detection, notification, and response using an agency’s existing systems and technology.
The COTS system uses existing public traffic cameras whose video images are processed by TrafficVision video analytic software to generate alerts when an abnormal condition occurs. These alerts are collected by the TIC Software, and using the TIC Project feature, a project is automatically created based on the location and direction of the wrong-way driver alert.
The TIC Project feature automatically creates notifications and response steps based on the specific response plan defined by the responsible agency, and maintains a record of all completed steps, including those performed automatically by software configuration. This system is available by software configuration rather than expensive custom development, and can be implemented more quickly and at a lower cost than custom-built solutions.
