International infrastructure design and engineering consultancy CH2M has recently won two major study contracts from the General Directorate for National Roads and Highways (GDDKiA) in Poland.
The GDDKiA branch in Wroclaw, has awarded CH2M a contract for the feasibility study of the planned expansion of National Road No 8 between Wroc?aw and K?odzko, along with the construction of several associated bypasses. The contract is the largest design project tendered by the Directorate in the country’s Lower Silesia region in the last year.
As part of the contract, CH2M will develop a corridor study, feasibility study (STE?), conceptual design for the selected best option, and adjustment of the Functional and Utility Program for the 44 mile-long (70km) section of roadway. The feasibility study will compare variants based on technical, economic, and environmental factors throughout the project location, and will include traffic analysis to reach the optimal design version of the route. The expansion will upgrade National Road No.8, resulting in a better user experience and improved travel times for the 30,000 daily vehicles using the heavily-trafficked portions of the road.
The GDDKiA has also chosen CH2M to develop a corridor study, technical-economic-environmental study, and obtain an environmental decision for the reconstruction of the Brzesko – Nowy Sacz section of National Road No75. The company will develop at least five reconstruction design options, including a non-investment option based on maintenance of traffic and safety, for the 31 mile-long (50km) section of the route. The studies will encompass geographical, natural and social assessments, as well as multi-criteria and traffic safety analysis of proposed design solutions for the potential reconstruction/construction of:
• expanded lane capacity along the section of NR 75;
• a new road tunnel under Just Mountain;
• improved road nodes and structures;
• new service roads for supporting adjacent areas in the design section;
• environmental protection and equipment facilities.
CH2M is considered to be one of the leading engineering design and construction management companies in Poland. Employing more than 700 engineers and specialists, CH2M’s Global Design Production Center and Global Shared Services Center, is located in Krakow. Artur Mazurek, CH2M’s highways sales and transportation business development manager, commented, “With this new work for National Road No8, we’re proud to be driving the future of Poland’s roadways. Not only are we strengthening our relationship with the National Roads Directorate, we’re also contributing to some of the most crucial infrastructure improvements in the region. Our team in Krakow has delivered numerous similar transportation projects in Poland and globally over the last couple of years. This reconstruction project on National Road No 75 is interesting for us, as we’ll be able to bring our global portfolio of roadway and tunneling best practices to our work on the route.”
