Transportation solutions provider Kapsch TrafficCom is set to roll out new state-of-the-art traffic and intersection software across Madrid to help the Spanish capital manage its mobility for the coming years.
The Kapsch technology being deployed includes the EcoTrafiX and Mobility Data Platform, which will replace an existing solution, offering Madrid more flexibility and scalability for future challenges.
As part of an initiative to modernize Madrid’s mobility management, the city awarded Kapsch TrafficCom in early 2024 to supply a new platform to control the various existing traffic management systems. The agreement also includes the supply of hardware and maintenance of the city’s traffic control center.
The project, valued at €5.6m, represents a decisive step toward more efficient, sustainable and future-proof mobility management in Madrid, Kapsch noted. An initial version of the platform will be ready in October 2025, with the contract lasting for three years with two one-year extension options.
Javier Aguirre, managing director of Kapsch TrafficCom in Spain and Portugal, said: “With our EcoTrafiX Mobility Platform, the city will not only be able to meet today’s requirements, but also prepare for future challenges. We are very proud to have been working with the city for 45 years to improve mobility and quality of life in Madrid, as we have recently done with the first Bus Rapid Transit line or the extension of the low emission zone.”
In addition to the integrated software for managing traffic, Kapsch TrafficCom also delivered its EcoTrafiX technology to manage more than 1,000 intersections in the eastern area of Madrid.
The project is particularly noteworthy as it is the first of its kind in Europe to use EcoTrafiX as an integrated platform for managing multi-supplier systems.
