The US Department of Transportation’s ITS JPO has released its most comprehensive survey yet of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) across the USA, expanding its scope to include rural and smaller urban areas for the first time since the survey’s inception in 1999.
The 2023 ITS Deployment Tracking Survey, released by the Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office (ITS JPO), provides new insights into how transportation agencies are implementing smart technology on freeways, arterial roads, and transit systems. Previous surveys had focused primarily on major metropolitan areas.
This expanded survey gives a more complete picture of how ITS is being adopted across the country, focusing on technologies that help manage traffic flow, improve safety, and enhance public transportation efficiency.
It reveals which smart systems are most widely adopted by transportation agencies and identifies areas where there’s potential for further technological integration.
The ITS JPO has made the full reports, survey instruments, and raw data publicly available through their Deployment Evaluation website. This resource also includes historical data from previous surveys dating back to 1999, along with detailed information about the benefits and costs of various ITS technologies.
Transportation planners and policymakers can access additional resources including briefings, case studies, infographics, and interactive data visualizations through the DOT’s ITS Deployment Evaluation Program website to help inform their decisions about future technology investments.
