UK-based infrastructure services provider Amey is delivering street lighting programs for two Scottish councils, installing street lights with energy efficient LED lamps in Edinburgh, while undertaking maintenance of road and traffic sign lighting in Inverclyde.
Amey has begun preliminary design and preparatory works for a three-year program to install energy efficient street lights across Edinburgh, after being awarded a contract to replace existing traditional sodium discharge lamps with the latest high technology energy-efficient LED luminaires.
In addition to delivering significant energy reductions, this work will see savings for the council of £54m (US$71.2m) over 20 years. Replacing the old inefficient lanterns will also help Edinburgh City Council (ECC) reduce COâ‚‚ emissions and comply with the Scottish government’s energy efficiency legislation.
The contract award follows the announcement in November last year that the company is installing 56,000 new LED luminaires to street lights in a three-year contract for Manchester City Council. Amey was the first organization to adopt large scale LED street lighting deployments in the UK with its work on the Birmingham Highways Management and Maintenance PFI Contract, and has installed over 200,000 LED lights across the country so far.
“When we rolled out these energy efficient lights as a pilot project in 2014, they were very well received by local residents, who told us they preferred the crisper, brighter light to the orangey glow of the old, inefficient street lights,” explained ECC’s transport convener, Lesley Macinnes. “We are now planning to roll out energy-efficient street lights to communities right across Edinburgh, in a program that will last until the end of 2020.”
The Inverclyde Council contract is worth over £660,000 (US$870,000), and will see Amey maintain over 13,000 street lights, 1,000 traffic sign lights, and 600 items of ancillary electrical equipment across the district.
The company has managed the Lighting Maintenance Service contract in Inverclyde since its first award in January 2014. The new contract builds on the success of its work to maintain the council’s lighting infrastructure and replace existing street lights with new LED lanterns.

“They have maintained the street lighting in Inverclyde for the last four years, and in that period, we have received an excellent level of service.”
