Anglo-Australian company Smart Parking, in partnership with Australian Parking and Revenue Control (APARC), has been contracted to deploy Australia’s first fully-integrated end-to-end smart city parking system in the Tasmanian capital.
Over the last 12 months, Hobart City Council has begun to formulate and introduce various state-of-the-art smart city solutions. APARC is a leading-edge parking product provider and the sole distributor of Parkeon parking meters in Australia and New Zealand.
The company’s ‘Connected Cities’ venture is an Australian/New Zealand first, with a portfolio of meters, sensors, permits, enforcement, payment processing, and mobile phone parking, all available under one roof. Hobart’s complete smart parking system comprises Parkeon 7in (18cm) color screen parking meters, integrated enforcement sensors, a smart phone parking app, and real-time credit card processing.
Smart Parking has secured the contract to implement its vehicle detection sensor-based system and management platform. A total of 2,100 in-ground combined infrared/electromagnetic vehicle detection sensors will be used to collect and transmit real-time data to Hobart City Council via Smart Parking’s SmartRep back office management reporting software, and parking availability via its SmartApp smartphone application, giving residents live data on available parking spaces.
Parkeon color screen meters offer a ‘splash-screen’, so the council can report what is going in downtown Hobart, advertise, and even display missing person notices or law enforcement messages. Hobart’s meters will be the first meters in the country to accept payment by ApplePay.
New Zealand company Arthur D Riley’s (ADR) handheld enforcement devices and parking payment applications are also fully integrated with the Parkeon meters and Smart Parking’s vehicle detection sensors. The new smart city system aims to reduce traffic congestion, help tourists navigate the city more easily, and assist motorists to find and pay for parking.
