Serco Inc, a leading provider of professional, technology, and management services, has been awarded a new contract to manage the Austin District traffic management center for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
Headquartered in Reston, Virginia, Serco Inc is a wholly owned subsidiary of the UK-based Serco Group plc, a US$5bn international business that operates government and public services around the world. Serco’s new TxDOT contract has a one-year base period and three one-year option periods, and is valued at US$7m, if all the options are exercised. The company will be responsible for managing the TxDOT freeway operations in Austin’s Combined Transportation, Emergency & Communications Center (CTECC) 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The company’s work at the CTECC will help identify incidents faster, reduce roadway congestion and enhance emergency response coordination, with the aim of promoting more reliable journeys for motorists in one of the USA’s most heavily congested metropolitan areas.
The Austin CTECC improves emergency response coordination and cooperation by providing a centralized public safety facility, sustaining the operations of shared, critical emergency communications and transportation management for the region, with a primary goal of receiving and processing all emergency 9-1-1 calls. The facility and its operation is a partnership between:
Texas DOT – Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and Courtesy Patrol; City of Austin – Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services, Fire Department, Police Department, Transportation Department, and Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM); Travis County – Sheriff’s Office, Constables, and Office of Emergency Management; Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority – Fixed Route Dispatch.
Serco has a long history of managing operations at traffic management centers for state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) in the USA and highways agencies around the world, including active traffic management and intelligent transportation systems in the UK, and traffic/tunnel controls in Hong Kong. In the USA, Serco’s transportation division delivers intelligent transportation system (ITS) services, Air Traffic Control (ATC) operations, rail operations and maintenance, fleet management, and parking enforcement services throughout the country.
“We provide transportation services around the world and we are proud to have earned this contract with the Texas Department of Transportation,” said Dave Dacquino, chairman and CEO of Serco Inc. “We have a team in place who recognize the importance of safety to the district’s travelers and are standing by, ready to serve.”
