SES America Inc. (SESA), a leading manufacturer of digital, LED signage for the transportation industry, has recently installed several of its Messenger 6000 series dynamic message signs (DMS) in Massachusetts, together with a massive example in Canada.
The Rhode Island-based sign-maker has successfully installed and commissioned several DMS on SR 24, which will provide traffic information on the busy route between the Boston area and Southern Massachusetts. The new DMS are installed in close proximity to other SESA signs that are used to display travel time information as part of the state’s ‘Go Time’ project. The Messenger 6000 signs are connected to MassDOT’s Traffic Management Center using the latest version of NTCIP (National Transportation Communications for Intelligent transportation system Protocol).
The DMS are provided with the latest version of the company’s SCU6 controller equipped with embedded web server software, which provides major benefits for maintenance, such as easy access to fault reports, test messages, and firmware upgrades. The controllers can be upgraded remotely at any time with newer versions available, and allow graphics and new pre-defined message configuration. The SESA Messenger 6000’s energy efficiency will allow MassDOT to lower operational costs, due to the series’ low energy consumption. Due to the use of the latest LED generation and other efficient control features, the series uses 30% less energy than the industry standard, without compromising visibility and brightness.
As part of its multi-year contract with the City of Calgary in Canada, SESA recently delivered a massive 27.5ft-long (8.4m) Messenger 6000. The full matrix DMS installed on the Deerfoot Trail replaces an older obsolete DMS. It was successfully integrated with the city’s NTCIP traffic management software and is capable of displaying large font and graphics. The large DMS is equipped with nine front access doors to guarantee ease of access and maintenance to all components, which are rated to operate in the very harsh environments and extreme temperatures found in Calgary. SESA also provided the controller cabinet with the latest version of the NTCIP SCU6 controller.
As with most of the company’s projects, remote testing was conducted prior to delivery. SESA also provided remote internet access to the sign for the City to test and display messages while it was under testing at its facility in Rhode Island. SESA has also provided assistance and training during the sign installation and continuous customer support since then.
