Tunnels are among the safest places to be in an earthquake, according to geotechnical and structural engineers. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reveals that Seattle’s new SR 99 tunnel has been especially designed to survive quake disruptions on the same scale as the ‘big one’ – with a magnitude of 9 – that happened in 1989.
